"Today is the 10th anniversary of Daniel Alfredsson's Captaincy, having been selected to replace Alexei Yashin (on an interim basis...) on October 2, 1999.
Alfredsson is by far the longest serving active captain, with four years on his next closest competitor Jarome Iginla.
He was the first European to lead his team the Stanley Cup finals (Lidstrom was later the first to win a Cup as captain), and if he hangs on for two more seasons he will be longest serving European captain in NHL history, ousting Sundin who served 11 years as captain of the Leafs.
All Hail Alfie."
